Taking in almost $600 million worldwide, the blockbuster hit, Bohemian Rhapsody, gave Queen fans a wild ride through the life of legendary frontman, Freddie Mercury. Obviously Rami Malek, star of Mr. Robot and Emmy award winner, had some hefty shoes to fill, but that’s not all — he also had to fill some particularly large teeth. Freddie Mercury was known to be self-conscious of his pronounced overbite, which was caused by four extra teeth, but the multi-millionaire was reluctant to receive dental work, as he was afraid that any change to the structure of his mouth could jeopardize his octave range. As somewhat of a method actor, Rami Malek knew the teeth would play a major role in nailing Mercury’s manner of speaking, covering his lips and smiling frequently during interviews, so even before officially agreeing to the role, Malek asked for a pair of prosthetics a year prior to filming.

How Did Rami Malek Prepare for the Role?

As you might expect, prosthetic teeth were initially difficult to deal with. Malek would wear them everyday and, much like Mercury, would feel incredibly self-conscious. In an interview with Vanity Fair, he described how he began to compensate for the smile by working on his posture and the elegance with which he comported himself. This, Malek found, seemed to match the way Mercury gave interviews, sitting very straight and smiling at pointed moments, allowing him to capture a more authentic portrayal.

Where Are the Teeth Now?

After the filming of Bohemian Rhapsody, Rami Malek had the prosthetic teeth coated in gold as a memento. Malek called it, “probably the most ostentatious thing” he’d ever done, which seemed to match the “spirit of Freddie.” Though they are still in Malek’s possession, he has considered auctioning them off at a later date, and donating the proceeds to a charity Mercury would be proud of.
